Well developed planting, harvesting and storage technologies, as well as optimum means of handling and dosing, make energy grain an affordable and convenient fuel. Generally all types of grain used as animal feed are suitable.

The most suitable types of grain for combustion are those with chaff and low protein and nitrogen content, such as triticale.

Grain ash softens at approx. 700 °C (slag formation) (wood ash 1200 °C). Consequently it is recommended that, up to 50 kW boiler output, approx. 0.3 - 0.5 % by weight and above 50 kW boiler output, 0.5 - 0.8 % by weight calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 = slaked lime is admixed to the grain prior to combustion. Thus raises the calcium proportion in the fuel and the point at which the ash softens increases.
